Collin and Marisa,

I wanted to tell you that I had a

chance to put our mountain
training to good use. My wife and
I just got back from a great trip to
Ketchum last week. We took one
morning to do some mountain
flying around the Pioneer and
Sawtooth mountain ranges. We
also landed at Smiley Creek -
what a blast!.

On account of our great training
experience at Pinyon, I was lucky
enough to make a great landing
and uneventful takeoff.

So thanks again for the help and
be sure to tell Bradley thanks
also.

- Steve (California)

Mountain Flying Clinics

Parkwest Air Tours conducts Mountain Flying Clinics several times each year. These clinics consist of ground and flight training on the mountain flying environment, mountain weather trends, density altitude, preflight planning and preparation, takeoff and departure techniques, approach and landing considerations, and general mountain flying principles.

We schedule our clinics periodically throughout the year, on weekends, but can work with your schedule if you would like to book a tailored session that better suits your schedule.

Grand Junction is located in the high desert of western Colorado .  Not only is ours a perfect flight training environment (350 VFR days/year), it is also home to diverse activities to fit your and your family’s interests.  We are 2 hours by road to the major ski areas, near world-class mountain biking and hiking, and in the heart of Colorado ’s wine country.

Please see our route recommendations if flying yourself to Grand Junction.  Alternately, you may choose to travel commercially to Grand Junction, and rent an aircraft through us.  Grand Junction airport is served by Delta, United, Frontier, and America West Airlines.

The schedule is as follows:

Day 1, Friday at 2:00 pm:  Mountain Flying Ground Training Session at the West Star Aviation Training Room at Walker Field.  (4 hours)

Day 2 , Saturday at 7:00 am: Training Flight 1. Each pilot will be paired with an experienced CFI for a mountain flight to Aspen (ASE), over Hagerman Pass to  Leadville (LXV), then over Tennessee Pass to follow the Eagle and Colorado Rivers back to Grand Junction .  Each pilot will receive a certificate for landing at North America ’s highest airport in Leadville. (4-5 hours)

Day 3, Sunday (Optional):  Training Flight 2. Another training flight which will be tailored to the individual’s interest and proficiency level as well as aircraft performance and speed.  Possible airports include Telluride, Crested Butte, Creede, Gunnison and North Fork .

This training meets the requirements of the FAA Pilot Proficiency Award  (WINGS) Program and therefore functions as the equivalent of a Flight Review under FAR 61.56(e).

The cost is $195 and includes the following:

  • 4-hr Ground Training Session and all classroom materials
  • Copy of Sparky Imeson’s Mountain Flying Bible

Flight training and aircraft rental (if required) will be charged separately. Our rate for an experienced mountain CFI is $50/hour. Aircraft rental is available though our sister company, Colorado Flight Center.

Parkwest Air Tours is happy to arrange suitable lodging accomodations, if required.
